The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on stakeholders in Osun State to take active roles in ensuring credible elections ahead of the 2026 governorship poll. The appeal came as the commission intensified grassroots engagement across the state.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mutiu Agboke, made the call during stakeholder meetings held in Osogbo, Ede North, and Ede South. Participants included political parties, civil society groups, transport unions, and security agencies.
Agboke stressed that the credibility of the election depends on strict adherence to guidelines. He maintained that no candidate would be declared winner without the genuine votes of the people.
He explained that the local meetings were designed to bring engagement closer to communities. According to him, decentralised consultations would improve coordination and help stakeholders work together for a peaceful election.
To strengthen accountability, INEC said all ad-hoc staff must sign an oath of commitment before deployment. The commissioner warned that any official caught manipulating results would be traced, arrested, and prosecuted.
Security agencies assured the public of adequate preparations, while concerns such as overcrowding, drug abuse, and thuggery were highlighted. INEC reaffirmed that despite misinformation challenges, preparations remain on track for a credible Osun election.
