US Has MQ-9 Drones Operating In Nigeria Alongside 200 Troops – Reuters

The United States military has deployed advanced MQ-9 drones alongside about 200 troops to Nigeria to support ongoing security operations. The move is aimed at helping Nigerian forces tackle insurgent groups operating in the northern region.

According to officials, the drones are strictly being used for intelligence gathering and not for launching attacks. The personnel are also focused on training and providing strategic support rather than engaging directly in combat missions.

The Nigerian military confirmed that the assets are being operated from a base in Bauchi. Samaila Uba explained that the collaboration is helping improve how troops detect and respond to threats on the ground.

This development comes after the U.S. reduced its presence in West Africa, especially following its exit from Niger in 2024. The renewed involvement in Nigeria shows a shift back into regional security efforts against extremist groups.

Officials noted that the partnership is based on mutual agreement, with Nigeria requesting support to strengthen intelligence capabilities. The drones are capable of long surveillance missions, helping track movements and identify potential threats.

Although there is no clear timeline for how long the deployment will last, both countries say the focus remains on improving security outcomes. The cooperation highlights a growing effort to address insecurity through shared intelligence and coordinated planning.
