Benue govt begins training for 300 civil protection guards, backs state police

The Benue State Government has begun training 300 members of the Benue State Civil Protection Guards while openly supporting the creation of state police. Hyacinth Alia made this known during the launch of the programme in Gwer-East.

Represented by his deputy, Sam Ode, the governor said state policing is necessary for better security control. He noted that governors should have direct authority over security systems within their states for effective protection of lives and property.

The training, organised with support from the Kukah Centre, aims to improve the skills and professionalism of the guards. Officials said thousands of personnel have already been trained under the state’s wider security initiative.

Authorities believe the guards will act as first responders in local communities, supporting conventional security forces. The programme is expected to strengthen safety, improve response time, and enhance peace across the state.
