UEFA cancels Spain and Argentina ‘Finalissima’ over Middle East war

UEFA has confirmed the cancellation of the planned Finalissima match between the Spain national football team and the Argentina national football team. The match was originally scheduled for March 27 in Qatar but was called off due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

UEFA explained that the unstable situation in the region made the planned venue unsuitable for hosting the high-profile match. The Finalissima usually features the champions of the European Championship against the winners of the Copa America.

The last edition was held in 2022 at Wembley Stadium where Argentina defeated the Italy national football team. Later that same year, Argentina captain Lionel Messi lifted the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

UEFA had explored other options including moving the game to Santiago Bernabéu Stadium or playing it across two legs. However, scheduling disagreements between the teams meant organisers could not find a suitable solution, leading to the final cancellation.
