The Nigeria Police Force in Ondo State has dismissed claims that bandits are operating in the state. The Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, said recent attacks linked to kidnappings and killings were carried out by criminals and not bandits.
Lawal made the clarification in Akure during a security show of force by various agencies. He explained that investigations and arrests made so far showed that those behind the crimes were local criminal elements rather than organised bandit groups.
According to the police boss, two suspected suppliers who allegedly provided logistics support to kidnappers were arrested around the Eleyowo and Iluabo areas. Authorities believe these arrests will help security agencies track down other members of the criminal network.
Meanwhile, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa had earlier stated that bandits have not operated in the state since the Owo church attack. Despite this, residents around the Akure Airport axis have continued to raise concerns over killings and kidnappings in the area.
