The Federal Government of Nigeria has fulfilled its promises to the national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their victory at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2025 tournament. The team defeated Mali 78–64 in the final played last August to secure the championship title.
After the victory, Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved a cash reward of the naira equivalent of $100,000 for each player. The head coach, Rena Wakama, and every member of the technical crew were also awarded $50,000 each in recognition of their contribution to the success.
In addition to the financial rewards, the President also honoured the players and officials with the national award of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON). He further approved the allocation of a housing unit for each player and member of the technical team.
Officials of the National Sports Commission, led by Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade, presented the documents for the houses and honours to the team in Lyon, France, where the team is currently participating in the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament.
