The Lagos State Government has ordered all building owners to register and certify elevators in their properties, warning that unregistered units may be decommissioned after March 31, 2026. The directive aims to prevent accidents amid the city’s high-rise construction boom.
Lanre Mojola, CEO of the Lagos State Safety Commission, explained that elevators must be properly maintained, inspected, and certified to protect residents. Owners who fail to comply risk shutdowns and penalties.
To aid compliance, the government launched a digital platform, www.lasgsafetyreg.com, for registering new elevators and scheduling safety inspections for existing units. New lifts will also undergo mandatory inspections before carrying passengers.
Residents are urged to report unregistered or faulty elevators via the Safety Commission’s hotlines. The initiative emphasizes public participation and strict enforcement to maintain safety standards across Lagos.
