Government’s inaction fuels mob killings, not Sharia law – Ex-Rep Danmaliki

Former House of Representatives member, Aminu Danmaliki, has blamed rising mob killings linked to alleged blasphemy on government failure to prosecute offenders. Speaking in Bauchi, he insisted that Sharia law does not support the killing of innocent people.

Danmaliki said Sharia law is a religious legal framework meant for Muslims and does not apply to non-Muslims. He warned that calls to abolish the system could amount to undermining religious freedom in Nigeria.

He also reacted to moves by the United States Congress urging Nigeria to end Sharia law, saying the focus should instead be on security reforms, intelligence sharing, stronger border control and tackling terrorism financing.

The former lawmaker cited the killing of Deborah Yakubu as an example of mob violence caused by individuals, not by Sharia law itself. He argued that failure to prosecute those responsible encourages further attacks and called on the government to enforce justice and strengthen peaceful coexistence.
