A British couple tragically lost their lives after getting into difficulty while swimming at Shellharbour Beach South in Shell Cove. The victims, a 66-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman, were visiting relatives in Australia when the incident happened during a family outing.
Witnesses at the beach quickly rushed to help after the couple struggled in the water. Two off-duty nurses and other beachgoers pulled them from the sea and performed CPR while waiting for paramedics to arrive. Sadly, both victims were later confirmed dead at the scene.
Officials from the New South Wales Police Force described the incident as heartbreaking. Authorities also praised the brave efforts of those who tried to save the couple, saying they did everything possible to give them a chance of survival.
Emergency services, including firefighters and medical teams, responded quickly to the scene. Reports suggest that lifeguards were not on patrol at the beach at the time. The tragedy also highlights growing concerns about open-water safety in Australia, where dozens of drowning incidents have been reported in recent months.
