President Trump calls on Australia to give asylum to Iranian women’s soccer team members

President Donald Trump has called on Australia to grant asylum to the Iranian women’s soccer team, fearing they may face persecution after losing 2-0 to the Philippines in the Asian Cup. The players were criticized by Iranian media for not singing the national anthem before their first match amid the ongoing Middle East conflict.

One player reportedly signaled for help using the international SOS distress gesture while inside the team bus, raising concerns for their safety if they returned home. Trump warned Australian Prime Minister that forcing the team back could endanger their lives and offered US asylum if Australia refused.

FIFA confirmed it is in close contact with Australian authorities to ensure the players’ safety, emphasizing that the team’s security remains a priority. The players sang the national anthem in later matches, but their initial refusal sparked controversy among supporters of the Iranian regime.

Beau Busch, president of FIFPRO for Asia/Oceania, said the players’ agency over their next steps must be respected, noting some may want asylum or extended stay in Australia, while others may wish to return to Iran.

Regional instability from US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran has affected Gulf states, causing travel and administrative issues for teams, including Iraq, potentially impacting their World Cup playoff matches.

Iraq’s coach Graham Arnold suggested adjusting playoff schedules, allowing more time to decide Iran’s World Cup participation, with alternatives proposed if Iran withdraws from competition.
