Customs intercepts N6.38bn expired drugs, codeine, security gear at Apapa

The Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted 13 containers carrying expired drugs, food items and restricted security equipment valued at about ₦6.38 billion at Apapa Port. The seizure was announced during a press briefing by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi in Lagos.

According to Adeniyi, the operation followed intelligence-driven enforcement and the use of advanced scanning technology to identify suspicious cargo. Officers also carried out targeted physical inspections which helped uncover several illegal items hidden inside the containers.

Among the seized goods were expired pharmaceutical products such as cold caplets, chloroquine injections and diclofenac tablets. Customs officials also discovered large quantities of Hyegra 200, Sildenafil Citrate and about 800 cartons of codeine concealed inside toilet cisterns and sanitary materials.

Other items recovered include bulletproof vests, helmets, walkie-talkies and tactical torches, which are classified as restricted security equipment. Expired food products like biscuits, tomato paste and thousands of energy drink cans were also found during the inspection exercise.
