Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that poor leadership remains the major obstacle to Africa’s development. He made this remark while speaking to graduates of the Olusegun Obasanjo Leadership Institute during a lecture held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The event was part of activities marking Obasanjo’s 89th birthday celebration. It took place at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library and focused on the theme “The Global Africa Enlightenment: From Chains to Renaissance.”
Several prominent Nigerian leaders attended the lecture. Among them were Peter Obi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Dapo Abiodun, Ibikunle Amosun, and Gbenga Daniel, who all gathered to witness the institute’s convocation ceremony.
Obasanjo warned that when leaders are not properly prepared for leadership roles, nations suffer serious consequences. According to him, such situations can lead to corruption, weak institutions, lack of education, and growing poverty among citizens.
The former president explained that Africa’s biggest challenge is not the lack of natural resources or intelligent people. Instead, he believes the continent struggles because it lacks well-trained and responsible leaders.
He noted that a single leader with strong values, discipline, and integrity can bring positive change. According to Obasanjo, good leadership can transform communities, rebuild institutions, and help redirect a nation toward progress.
