Former Nigerian winger Tijani Babangida has revealed that Ademola Lookman was given a special role by Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. According to Babangida, the coach allowed Lookman to move freely across the attacking areas rather than sticking to one position.
Speaking on Sunday Oliseh’s Global Football Insights, Babangida explained that Chelle removed the fixed number 11 role in the squad. This allowed players, including Lookman and the strikers, to rotate positions and create more attacking opportunities for the team.
The former Nigeria national football team star said the tactical approach helped the Super Eagles attack more effectively. With midfielders joining the attack and players switching positions, the team looked more dangerous in front of goal.
Babangida noted that the system introduced by Chelle resembles the traditional attacking style Nigeria used years ago. He said the flexibility on the wings allowed players to move freely and support each other during matches.
The former AFC Ajax player added that many fans were surprised to see how well the team played during the tournament. According to him, the improved performance was largely due to the tactical system adopted by the coach.
He also expressed hope that the Super Eagles will continue using the same approach in future competitions. Babangida believes the strategy could help the team maintain good performances and improve their attacking strength.
