FG places 6-year ban on new universities, polytechnics, colleges of education

The Federal Government has introduced a six-year suspension on the creation of new tertiary institutions across Nigeria. The decision was taken during a meeting of the Federal Executive Council chaired by Bola Tinubu. Authorities say the pause will allow the government to focus on improving the quality and sustainability of existing institutions.

Minister of Education Tunji Alausa explained that many universities, polytechnics and colleges of education are already facing financial and operational challenges. He noted that while the number of institutions continues to grow, resources and infrastructure have not expanded at the same pace.

Data from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board showed that more than 2.3 million candidates applied for admission last year, but fewer than 228,000 secured places in public universities. The government believes the gap highlights the need to strengthen existing institutions before approving new ones.

Meanwhile, the council also restored the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-formal Education as an independent commission. Officials say about 56 million Nigerians are still illiterate, and the commission plans to expand literacy programs through community learning centres and media campaigns.
