FEC approves demolition, reconstruction of Lagos’ Carter Bridge

Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the full demolition and reconstruction of the Carter Bridge in Lagos. The project aims to replace the aging structure that can no longer be rehabilitated.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, confirmed that N5.6 billion has been allocated to hire engineering consultants for design and cost assessment. The decision follows extensive stakeholder consultations and prior FEC backing.

Carter Bridge is a major link connecting Lagos Island to the mainland, handling heavy commuter and commercial traffic daily. The rebuild is part of broader infrastructure upgrades across the country.

FEC also approved six other large-scale projects, including highway upgrades, with plans to complete and commission at least four projects per zone by May 15, emphasizing lasting impact over temporary fixes.
