EU Warns Iran Conflict Could Risk Internal Civil War

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said Thursday that countries across the Middle East have expressed concern that escalating tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel could destabilize Iran internally and potentially lead to civil unrest.

Speaking on March 5 ahead of a planned video conference between EU foreign ministers and representatives of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Kallas said regional partners fear the situation could trigger internal conflict within Iran.

“When we talk to the countries in the region, they are also worried about civil wars inside Iran because of the regime’s leadership and what is going on there,” Kallas said.

The meeting between the European Union and GCC officials is set to focus on the situation in Iran and broader developments across the Middle East, as tensions continue to rise.

Kallas also accused Tehran of attempting to widen the scope of the conflict by drawing additional countries into the crisis, emphasizing that the EU is calling for restraint, stability, and closer coordination with international partners.

Ahead of the talks, Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, secretary general of the GCC, said the council had condemned Iranian attacks targeting civilians, infrastructure, and diplomatic facilities in member states.
