Cross River lawmaker suspended for manhandling wife

The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended a lawmaker, Ovat Agbor, who represents Obubra I State Constituency, over alleged violent conduct involving his wife. The suspension was announced during a plenary session after lawmakers condemned the reported behaviour as unacceptable for a public official.

The motion for his suspension was moved by Davies Etta and seconded by Francis Bassey Asuquo. Lawmakers argued that such actions contradict the moral standards expected from members of the legislative arm of government.

Following deliberations, the Assembly ordered an indefinite suspension from all legislative activities and established a committee to investigate the allegations. The lawmaker was escorted out of the chamber by the Sergeant-at-Arms as directed by the House leadership.

Reacting to the situation, the Speaker, Elvert Ayambem, said the Assembly remains committed to discipline and integrity. Meanwhile, the lawmaker’s wife, Glory Agbor, later appealed for privacy, stating that their family had resolved their differences and asking the public to respect their marriage.
