Iran is now advancing plans to choose a new Supreme Leader after the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during recent U.S.–Israeli airstrikes. The Assembly of Experts, an 88-member clerical body, is tasked under Iran’s constitution with picking the next leader as soon as possible.
Members of the Assembly have reportedly shortlisted candidates and are working quickly to make a final decision, though the ongoing conflict and security threats have made the process sensitive and at times delayed.
Reports indicate Mojtaba Khamenei, the late leader’s son, has emerged as a leading contender to succeed his father, backed by influential clerics and security figures. A senior member of the Assembly said the selection could be completed soon, once consultations are finalised.
In the meantime, an interim leadership council made up of the President, the judiciary head, and a senior cleric continues to run the country until a permanent leader is appointed.
