FIFA has officially named DR Congo as Africa’s representative in the inter-confederation play-off tournament for the 2026 World Cup. The decision ends Nigeria’s hopes of making it to the global tournament through the play-off route.
Nigeria had filed a protest after losing to DR Congo in the CAF play-offs, claiming that ineligible players were used during the match. The game ended 1-1 and was decided by penalties, with Nigeria falling short.
In its statement, FIFA listed the six qualified teams for the play-off competition, including Bolivia, DR Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia, and Suriname. The tournament will determine the final two teams for the 2026 World Cup.
The competition is set to begin on March 26, with matches to be played across host cities in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Nigeria will now have to wait for the next qualification cycle.
