2027: We must enforce all guidelines, regulations – INEC warns political parties

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned political parties to obey all regulations ahead of the 2026 primary elections. INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, gave the warning during a technical workshop in Akwa Ibom State. He said the commission will strictly apply its updated guidelines to ensure fairness and order.

According to him, frequent internal party crises and court cases have distracted the commission from its main duty of election planning. He noted that poor conduct of party primaries often leads to voter apathy and legal battles. INEC plans to introduce tougher standards on membership records, financial transparency, and inclusion of women, youths, and persons with disabilities.

Amupitan stressed that INEC may be neutral but will not stand by while rules are ignored. He explained that the quality of party primaries directly affects the credibility of general elections. The commission aims to remove unclear areas in the 2026 regulations to protect the will of Nigerian voters.

Other stakeholders at the workshop also supported the review of the guidelines. They said changes in the Electoral Act require clearer rules for political parties. INEC believes stronger enforcement will reduce disputes and improve the 2027 general elections.
