Israel has launched a “pre-emptive” strike on Iran, targeting what it described as imminent threats to national security. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said the operation was coordinated with the United States and planned months in advance. Explosions were reported in Tehran, while sirens sounded across Israel as authorities warned of possible retaliatory missile attacks.
American forces are also reported to be conducting strikes in coordination with Israel. Iranian state media confirmed the blast near offices linked to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who has reportedly been moved to a secure location. Israel shut schools, closed workplaces, and restricted public gatherings as a precautionary measure.
The escalation follows ongoing tensions and repeated warnings from Israel and the US over Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programmes. Civilian airspace in Israel was closed, and authorities advised against traveling to airports amid fears of further attacks. Diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran continue but face growing uncertainty.
Analysts warn the strikes may heighten instability in the region and complicate any negotiations over Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Israel insists any agreement must include dismantling key nuclear facilities and limiting missile capabilities, while Tehran seeks sanctions relief without linking negotiations to its missile program.
