Nigeria’s rising insecurity: Don’t expect immediate results from U.S. military – Security expert

Renewed attacks in parts of Northern Nigeria have raised fresh concerns about safety, despite recent support from the United States military. Communities in Zamfara and Plateau states have reported killings, displacement, and threats from armed groups. Many residents say they are living in fear as violence continues.

In Zamfara, some communities in Tsafe Local Government Area were reportedly cut off by bandits, with attempts by security forces to regain control facing resistance. Plateau State also witnessed deadly attacks in Barkin Ladi and Riyom, leading to more families fleeing their homes. Tension remains high as communal clashes add to the crisis.

Reacting to the situation, retired military officer Major Muhammad Bashir Galma (Rtd) said Nigerians should not expect quick results from the arrival of U.S. personnel. According to him, the foreign mission focuses mainly on training and capacity building, not direct combat. He explained that such efforts take time before visible progress can be seen.

Galma also warned that political interference and hidden interests could slow down security improvements. While acknowledging the efforts of Nigerian forces, he stressed that patience and proper coordination are needed. For affected communities, however, the priority remains immediate protection and lasting peace.
