Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has asked the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Amupitan, to resign over the newly released 2027 election timetable. Speaking in Abuja, he described the schedule for party primaries as unfair and unacceptable.
Hashim argued that INEC does not have the constitutional power to dictate when political parties should hold their primaries. He claimed the adjusted timetable appears designed to favour the All Progressives Congress and weaken opposition parties facing internal disputes.
He warned that if the chairman fails to step down, Nigerians may organise mass action to demand his removal. According to him, credible elections in 2027 require rebuilding public trust in the electoral body’s leadership.
Hashim also stressed that party primaries are internal matters, as long as nomination deadlines in the Electoral Act are met. He cautioned against actions that could threaten Nigeria’s democratic stability after years of uninterrupted civil rule.
