Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa has disclosed that 55 Ghanaians have died while fighting in the Ukraine conflict. He described the situation as heartbreaking, noting that 272 Ghanaians were reportedly drawn into the war since 2022, with two currently held as prisoners of war.
After meeting Ukrainian officials in Kyiv, Ablakwa said the figures represent real families and futures lost. He stressed that Ghana cannot ignore the growing number of citizens caught up in the conflict.
Reports indicate that some African nationals were allegedly promised jobs abroad but later found themselves enlisted into military service. Authorities in Ghana say they are working to track and shut down illegal recruitment networks operating through online platforms.
Other African countries, including Kenya and South Africa, have reported similar cases. The revelations have raised concerns across the continent about deceptive recruitment schemes linked to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
