Ramadan: NAFDAC uncovers use of dangerous chemicals to ripen fruits

The NAFDAC has uncovered the use of harmful chemicals by some traders to artificially ripen fruits ahead of Ramadan. The agency warned that these substances pose serious health risks to consumers, especially during the festive period when fruit consumption rises.

Inspectors reported finding unsafe chemicals, including calcium carbide and other unapproved ripening agents, in markets across the country. NAFDAC emphasised that such practices violate food safety laws and regulations.

The agency urged the public to buy fruits from trusted sources and to wash fruits thoroughly before consumption. Officials also called on fruit sellers to adhere strictly to approved ripening methods to ensure consumer safety.

NAFDAC reiterated its commitment to continuous monitoring and promised enforcement actions against offenders. The agency highlighted that protecting public health remains its top priority during Ramadan and beyond.
