The European Union has called for stronger co-creation between Nigeria and Europe in science and innovation. Speaking at the Nigeria–EU Science and Innovation Day in Lagos, Ambassador Gautier Mignot said the partnership should be built on joint ownership, not just knowledge transfer.
He explained that science and innovation are vital for solving issues such as food security, digital access and climate change. The EU’s support, he added, focuses on strengthening Nigeria’s innovation system and linking research to business opportunities.
EU officials noted that Nigeria is one of Africa’s top participants in Horizon Europe, with universities and startups working with European partners in areas like artificial intelligence, agriculture, fintech and climate solutions. They encouraged deeper institutional ties and expanded joint research.
Representing the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, government officials reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to global partnerships. They said collaboration in agriculture, digital technology and research funding will be coordinated to deliver measurable development results.
