Court to rule on ex-Niger governor’s N1.5bn fraud case

A Federal High Court in Lagos will rule on May 8, 2026, on a request by former Niger State Governor Muazu Babangida Aliyu and co-accused Umar Muhammed Nasko to dismiss the N1.5 billion fraud case against them. The decision follows the submission and adoption of final written arguments by lawyers from both sides.

The case, filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), involves eight charges, including conspiracy and money laundering totaling N1,509,791,200. EFCC counsel Faruk Abdallah highlighted that 11 witnesses and numerous documents were presented during the prosecution’s case.

Aliyu and Nasko each filed no-case submissions after the prosecution closed its case, with Aliyu submitting his written application on December 18, 2025, and Nasko on November 23, 2025. The EFCC opposed the dismissal, insisting the charges have merit and evidence has been duly presented.

Justice Yelim Bogoro adjourned the matter and confirmed that the court would deliver its judgment on May 8, 2026, bringing the long-running case closer to resolution.
