SA president, Cyril Ramaphosa thanks Putin for release of South Africans lured into Russia-Ukraine war

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for helping return South African nationals who were allegedly drawn into the Russia–Ukraine conflict. Fifteen of the 17 men misled into joining Russian-linked mercenary groups have either returned home or are on their way.

Four men arrived in South Africa last week, while 11 others are expected shortly, leaving two still in Russia. The men had reportedly been trapped in the Donbas region after being lured with false promises.

Ramaphosa expressed “heartfelt gratitude” to Putin for supporting the process, while authorities continue investigating how the men were recruited. South African law prohibits citizens from joining foreign armed forces without government approval.

The conflict, ongoing since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, has seen foreign fighters from multiple countries, including African nations. Investigations suggest deceptive recruitment tactics, with some promised jobs abroad turning into involuntary deployment in conflict zones.
