The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has warned residents across Nigeria about the serious risks linked to touching live electrical wires or going near fallen power lines. The agency said such actions can lead to severe injuries or death and urged the public to always treat exposed cables as dangerous.
According to the commission, many electrocution incidents happen because people underestimate the danger of electricity or attempt to move wires themselves. It stressed that only trained professionals should handle electrical faults or damaged lines.
NERC also advised communities to quickly report broken poles, sparking cables, or loose connections to distribution companies instead of trying to fix them. Prompt reporting, it noted, can prevent tragedies and protect lives and property.
The regulator reiterated that public safety remains a top priority and called for stronger awareness about electrical hazards. It encouraged schools, landlords, and community leaders to educate others on safe behavior around power infrastructure.
