NPMA appeals to Nigerian govt for compensation after Lagos market fire

Traders under the Ndigboamaka Progressive Markets Association (NPMA), representing 58 Lagos markets, have appealed to the Federal Government for urgent support after a fire destroyed shops at Great Nigeria House, Balogun Market, on December 24, 2025. The blaze and subsequent demolition left many traders without livelihoods.

In a letter signed by NPMA President Chinedu Ukatu, the group requested immediate financial compensation and relief to help victims rebuild their businesses and support affected families. Ukatu emphasized the severe impact on traders’ income and called for prompt government action.

While commending the Lagos State Government’s ongoing efforts, the NPMA urged faster evacuation and restoration of damaged market areas to allow traders to resume commercial activities. The association stressed cooperation with authorities to prevent future disasters.

Ukatu reiterated that NPMA remains committed to protecting traders’ welfare and ensuring proper measures are implemented to support economic recovery and safety in Lagos markets.
