Maduro should be tried in Venezuela, not abroad – Brazil’s President, Lula

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva says that former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro should be tried in Venezuela, not overseas, rejecting foreign legal action against him. Lula made the comments in an interview while attending an AI summit in India, emphasising respect for national sovereignty and the need for Venezuela to handle its own judicial matters.

Maduro was reportedly captured in Caracas earlier this year by US forces and taken to New York to face drug-trafficking charges, a move that has drawn international concern and debate. Critics, including Brazil’s president, argue that one nation seizing a foreign head of state sets a dangerous precedent.

Speaking to India Today TV, Lula stressed that restoring democracy in Venezuela is the priority and that any trial should occur under Venezuela’s legal system rather than abroad. He also said Brazil rejects actions that interfere in another country’s internal affairs.

The comments come amid broader diplomatic talks, with Lula planning to present proposals to Donald Trump on issues like organized crime and fair legal treatment, reflecting continued dialogue despite differences on Venezuela.
