The Federal Capital Territory High Court has criticized former pension task team chairman Abdulrasheed Maina and his lawyer over repeated delays in his alleged N738.6 million fraud trial. Justice Abubakar Kutigi said the court was concerned about constant adjournments and changes of legal counsel since the case began in 2019.
Maina is facing trial alongside Ann Igwe Olachi on nine charges brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over alleged receipt of stolen funds. At the latest hearing, his new lawyer, Emmanuel Wuyi, asked for two weeks to study the case, citing his recent appointment and the defendant’s health.
The judge rejected the request, noting that witnesses were ready and accusing the defence of filing multiple applications that slowed proceedings. Prosecutor Francis Usani also argued that the defence appeared to be frustrating the trial process despite submitting several legal motions.
Wuyi later withdrew a request for a stay of proceedings and confirmed readiness to continue. The court then adjourned the matter to February 26, 2026, for continuation of the trial-within-trial.
