Lagos bans ‘korope’ buses amid protest

The Lagos State Government has announced a ban on mini-buses popularly called korope along the CMS–Lekki–Epe corridor after operators blocked traffic during protests. Officials said the disruption violated agreements earlier reached with transport stakeholders.

According to Transport Adviser Sola Giwa, the protest undermines the Bus Reform Initiative, a plan created to modernise public transport and make travel safer and more organised for commuters. Authorities stressed that the reform followed consultations with unions and industry leaders.

The government said both National Union of Road Transport Workers and Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria had agreed to the programme before it started. The reform introduces bigger buses, digital ticketing, regulated routes, and improved monitoring for safety.

Officials insist the policy will continue despite resistance, adding that strict enforcement will follow for anyone who ignores the rules. They also promised continued dialogue while prioritising passenger comfort, stable fares, and a more efficient transport system.
