Hundreds flee from Niger state to Benin Republic as bandits attacks intensify

Hundreds of residents have reportedly fled Borgu Local Government Area after fresh bandit attacks forced communities to abandon their homes. Lawmaker Abdurrahman Bala Gambo confirmed the incident, saying armed attackers stormed Konkoso town and drove villagers away before setting parts of the area ablaze.

Speaking to BBC Hausa, the representative explained that most residents escaped before the gunmen arrived, which prevented casualties. However, he said the attackers later returned, found the town deserted, and burned houses and property.

Many displaced persons reportedly crossed into Benin Republic, where they sought refuge with relatives. The attacks also affected nearby communities in Agwara and other parts of Niger State, leaving families without shelter, food, or basic belongings.

A local witness said villagers fled immediately when the armed men appeared, abandoning valuables and supplies. He added that those who escaped across the border now feel safer, claiming security forces there are actively confronting armed groups.
