The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has raised concerns over threats to democracy in Nigeria amid controversies surrounding the Electoral Act Amendment Bills in the National Assembly. The forum insists that real-time transmission of election results is crucial to improving transparency and strengthening democratic processes.
ACF’s National Publicity Secretary, Prof. T. A. Muhammad-Baba, claimed that external influences are undermining the independence of the legislature. He urged lawmakers to make decisions in the best interest of all Nigerians, warning that interference in legislative work could weaken democracy.
Muhammad-Baba stressed that the lawmaking process appears driven by personal, sectional, or external interests rather than constitutional procedures. He noted that improper tampering with bills, including forgery or reintroduction of already settled laws, risks eroding public trust in governance.
The forum called on Nigerians to monitor the Electoral Act Bill closely, arguing that the 10th National Assembly must defend its constitutional mandate. ACF warned that failing to uphold legislative independence could harm democratic growth and public confidence ahead of the 2027 elections.
