Anambra police arrest man involved in kidnapping for ransom in Awka

Police authorities in Anambra State have arrested Ifeanyi Ekemezie, 32, for alleged involvement in kidnapping operations around Awka and nearby areas. The suspect was picked up by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad in the early hours of February 17, 2026.

According to police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga, Ekemezie admitted being part of a three-man gang known for kidnapping and car theft. He also reportedly confessed that another suspect, Ndubuisi Anyakaku, used his bank account to receive ₦1 million ransom from a victim.

Police said investigations began after a December 31, 2025 attack in Amansea, where a victim was robbed, abducted, and had ₦3 million transferred from his account before being abandoned and later rescued. Authorities believe the gang was responsible for several similar crimes in the area.

The suspect also allegedly admitted membership in the Vikings Confraternity and involvement in cult-related violence. Police say efforts are ongoing to arrest other gang members and recover weapons used in their operations.
