Authorities in Pretoria have charged three suspects over the killing of Nigerian ride-hailing driver Isaac Satlat after disturbing dashcam footage circulated online and sparked public anger. The accused — Dikeledi Mphela, Goitsione Machidi, and McClaren Mushwana — appeared briefly in court, where they withdrew their bail requests. Police also confirmed that a fourth suspect has surrendered and is expected to face charges soon.
Investigators said the 22-year-old, who worked with Bolt, was attacked while on duty. According to prosecutors, the suspects ordered a ride using a phone number not linked to any of them. Two allegedly entered the vehicle while two others followed behind. Authorities claim the group forced him to stop, assaulted him, and stole his phone and car, which was later recovered.
A representative of the National Prosecuting Authority, Lumka Mahanjana, confirmed that the defendants also face robbery charges. The case has drawn widespread attention, especially as concerns grow about safety risks faced by app-based drivers. The victim’s family insists the killing was not driven by nationality, even though fears about xenophobic attacks remain a sensitive issue in the country.
The incident has triggered protests by drivers and advocacy groups, including the E-hailing Partners Council, who are calling for stronger passenger verification and protective measures. Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, one operator urged authorities to create a special task force to address attacks on drivers. The matter has been adjourned until next week as investigations continue.
