He promoted civil liberties across the world – Tinubu mourns Jesse Jackson

President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of legendary civil rights advocate Jesse Jackson, who died at the age of 84. In his tribute, Tinubu described the late preacher and activist as a servant-leader whose lifelong dedication to justice inspired people across the world and gave hope to oppressed communities.

The Nigerian leader recalled Jackson’s early activism alongside Martin Luther King Jr., noting that he played a key role in advancing racial equality and defending the rights of marginalized groups. He said Jackson’s influence stretched beyond the United States, as he consistently advocated better social and economic opportunities for African-Americans and other disadvantaged populations.

Tinubu also reflected on his time as a student in Chicago, where he witnessed firsthand the impact of Jackson’s campaigns against injustice and discrimination. He described the cleric as a man of faith who helped steer society toward fairness and inclusiveness, adding that his activism strengthened democratic ideals in Africa and beyond.

The president further credited Jackson’s efforts for paving the way for historic milestones such as the election of Barack Obama. According to Tinubu, Jackson’s earlier presidential bids and persistent advocacy helped break barriers and inspired future generations to believe that equality and opportunity are achievable through perseverance and courage.
