The Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, has donated ₦100 million to traders affected by the recent fire disaster at Singer Market in Kano. The fire, which broke out over the weekend, destroyed shops and goods reportedly worth billions of naira, leaving many business owners struggling to recover from the losses.
During his visit to the market, the lawmaker said the financial support was meant to ease the hardship faced by victims whose livelihoods were wiped out. He noted that the tragedy affects not only traders but also the wider Kano community, stressing that commerce plays a central role in the city’s economy.
Barau also pledged to push for the installation of modern fire-fighting equipment at the market to reduce the risk of future incidents and improve emergency response. Market leaders welcomed the gesture, with the chairman of the traders’ association expressing gratitude and stating that the market had experienced two major fire outbreaks recently, with damages estimated at over ₦5 billion.
The senator was accompanied by government officials, lawmakers, and aides during the visit. The delegation reassured victims of continued support as recovery efforts continue, while stakeholders emphasized the need for preventive measures to protect markets and small businesses from recurring disasters.
