Protests Erupt at EFCC Headquarters in Abuja Following El-Rufai’s Visit

Abuja, February 16, 2026 — Tensions escalated at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja on Monday as supporters of former reportedly clashed with security personnel.

Eyewitnesses said tear gas was deployed in an attempt to disperse the crowd. In footage obtained by reporters, protesters could be heard declaring, “We will come back; when it clears, we will come back,” signaling their intent to return despite the disruption.

Earlier reports indicated that El-Rufai arrived at the EFCC offices with hundreds of supporters, following news of an alleged attempt to arrest him at last Thursday.

The EFCC has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
