An Area Court in Ilorin, Kwara State, has ended the marriage between Rashida Bashir and her husband, Bashir Adegboye, following allegations of infidelity and emotional distress. The presiding judge, Hammed Ajumonbi, ruled that the union be dissolved after a letter from the husband indicated his agreement to the separation. The court directed the woman to observe a three-month iddah period in line with Islamic tradition.
During the hearing, Rashida told the court that her husband had multiple relationships outside their marriage and showed little respect for her. She said she became increasingly worried about her health and wellbeing due to his conduct. According to her testimony, she later discovered that several other women had children for him, a situation she described as unbearable.
The petitioner also stated that some of the women allegedly contacted her frequently, using harsh words and insults. She said the constant calls left her emotionally drained and convinced her that ending the marriage was the best decision. The judge noted that the husband did not contest the divorce request.
In its ruling, the court granted custody of the couple’s two children to the mother. The father was ordered to pay ₦20,000 monthly for their upkeep while retaining reasonable access to them. The decision, reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), brings the matter to a legal close while outlining responsibilities for both parties moving forward.
