The Imo State Police Command has dismissed three officers for their alleged involvement in armed robbery, kidnapping and car snatching in Owerri. The officers — Sgt. Ekwueme Gift, Sgt. Eto Ikechukwu and Cpl. Divine Ogwuaru — were removed from service after an orderly room trial found them guilty of the charges, including impersonation.
According to police sources, the incident occurred on February 8, 2026, along Mbaise Road in Owerri. The suspects were said to have robbed residents at gunpoint and stolen a vehicle. The car was later tracked to the Owerri-Onitsha Road while they were allegedly attempting to sell it before security operatives intercepted them. A civilian accomplice, identified as Elias Chukwu, who reportedly acted as the driver, has also been charged alongside the dismissed officers.
Investigations revealed that the officers were not officially assigned for patrol on the day of the crime. They allegedly posed as members of the Tiger Base Unit of the Command to carry out the operation. The offences were found to be in violation of relevant provisions of the Police Act and regulations guiding the conduct of personnel in the Nigeria Police Force.
Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Bosso, reiterated the Command’s zero tolerance for corruption and misconduct. He directed the Legal Department to ensure the suspects are promptly arraigned in court. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, said the swift dismissal shows the Command’s commitment to accountability and professionalism. Residents were also encouraged to report cases of police misconduct through the Complaint Response Unit desk line, with assurances of confidentiality.
