President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (rtd), as he marked his 70th birthday. The President described him as a patriot, a pan-Nigerian figure, and a fine gentleman who served the country with courage and dedication. The remarks were delivered at a public lecture organised by the Abia State Government in Umuahia to celebrate Ihejirika’s milestone.
Represented by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Ude, Tinubu noted that Ihejirika led the Nigerian Army during a challenging period in the fight against insurgency. He said the retired General demonstrated bravery and professionalism while defending the nation. The President also prayed for good health and long life for Ihejirika, stating that Nigeria still needs his wisdom and experience.
Tinubu used the occasion to restate his administration’s commitment to inclusive leadership within the country’s security structure. He pointed out that Ihejirika was the last service chief from the South-East before his government took office in May 2023. He added that his administration has since appointed Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla as Chief of Naval Staff and Air Marshal Sunday Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, both from the South-East region.
According to the President, such appointments are aimed at promoting national unity and ensuring every region feels represented in the nation’s security framework. He emphasized that strengthening national cohesion and loyalty is key to defeating threats facing the country. The event served not only as a birthday celebration but also as a platform to discuss strategies for improving security and unity across Nigeria.
