FA Cup: ‘It was silly of me’ – Chelsea striker, Delap reacts after missing open goal against Hull City

Chelsea striker Liam Delap has admitted that he made a mistake after missing a clear scoring opportunity in Friday’s FA Cup clash against Hull City A.F.C.. The Blues won the game 4-0 at the MKM Stadium to move into the next round, but Delap’s missed chance became one of the talking points of the match.

With the game still goalless, Delap pressed Hull goalkeeper Dillon Phillips as he tried to clear the ball. The striker blocked the clearance, and the ball appeared to be heading into the net. Thinking he had scored, Delap started to celebrate. However, the ball struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced back into play.

Delap recovered the ball but hesitated instead of shooting quickly, allowing Phillips to return and stop his second effort. Speaking after the match on BBC One, the former Ipswich Town player joked that he believed the ball had crossed the line. He admitted he should have reacted faster and described the moment as “silly,” saying he thought the referee would blow the whistle for a goal.

Despite the embarrassing miss, the 23-year-old made a strong contribution to the team’s victory by providing three assists. His performance helped Chelsea secure a comfortable win and increased his total goal involvements to six in 24 appearances this season across all competitions.
