EFCC, ICPC use case, force support for Tinubu’s second term – El-Rufai alleges

Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has alleged that Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies are being used to pressure political figures ahead of the next general elections. According to him, cases handled by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) are being weaponised to secure support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second-term ambition.

El-Rufai claimed that some politicians are allegedly facing investigations or legal scrutiny as a way to compel their loyalty. He argued that anti-graft institutions should remain neutral and focus strictly on fighting corruption without political interference.

The allegations have stirred reactions within political circles, with supporters of the administration dismissing the claims as unfounded. They insist that the EFCC and ICPC operate independently and are mandated to investigate corruption wherever it exists.

The development adds to growing debates about political accountability and the role of institutions in Nigeria’s democracy. Observers note that maintaining public trust in anti-corruption agencies will be crucial as the country moves closer to another election cycle.
