Senior Democratic lawmakers have said the British Royal Family’s reputation is “on the line” over its handling of the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, urging greater accountability and further investigation into potential national security risks.
Representative Suhas Subramanyam called on King Charles III to “do the right thing” and allow authorities to hold his brother, Prince Andrew, accountable for his past association with the convicted sex offender.
“The family’s reputation is on the line,” Rep Subramanyam said. “I hope they do the right thing by letting the authorities hold Andrew accountable for anything he did.”
His remarks came after Buckingham Palace said the King felt “profound concern” over allegations linked to his brother and pledged cooperation with an ongoing Thames Valley Police investigation into claims that an Epstein victim was sent to Royal Lodge, Andrew’s former residence, in 2010.
Rep Subramanyam also reiterated his call for Prince Andrew to testify before the House Oversight Committee, adding that justice for victims “has many forms,” including scrutiny of the reputations and titles of those associated with Epstein.
Speaking outside Capitol Hill, Representative Melanie Stansbury described Epstein as a “national security risk” to the United Kingdom, arguing that his activities extended beyond sex trafficking to include alleged money laundering and potential influence operations.
“We still don’t understand the nature of his intelligence work,” Rep Stansbury said, raising concerns about possible “influence peddling of state secrets to foreign governments.”
In an apparent reference to former British Cabinet minister Peter Mandelson, Rep Stansbury called for an investigation into any individuals who may have shared official information with Epstein.
“What’s happened in the UK is Jeffrey Epstein was a national security risk,” she said. “Individuals who may have intentionally or inadvertently shared information should be held accountable.”
Representative Pramila Jayapal also weighed in, stating that Epstein’s global network had implicated high-profile figures worldwide.
“Around the world, princes, ambassadors and even prime ministers are being brought down for their participation in this global sex trafficking ring,” she said, adding that Epstein’s associates “absolutely believed they were above the law.”
The comments were made as US Attorney General Pam Bondi appeared before Congress to face questions regarding the handling of the Epstein case.
