CMDs blame budget cuts as Reps faults teaching hospitals over poor research funding

Chief Medical Directors (CMDs) of federal teaching hospitals have blamed reduced government allocations for the decline in research activities, as members of the House of Representatives raised concerns about poor research funding in the institutions. The lawmakers reportedly questioned hospital management over the low level of innovation and academic output.

During a recent engagement, the Reps expressed dissatisfaction with what they described as weak investment in medical research despite funds allocated to tertiary health institutions. They stressed that teaching hospitals are expected to lead in research, training, and advanced medical practice.

In response, the CMDs explained that continuous budget cuts and rising operational costs have limited their ability to properly fund research projects. According to them, most available funds are used to maintain facilities, pay salaries, and provide essential medical services, leaving little room for research development.

Health stakeholders say the situation highlights the need for better funding structures and stronger collaboration between government and hospital management. They believe improving research capacity in teaching hospitals will strengthen healthcare delivery, medical education, and innovation in Nigeria.
