Suspected Tranformer vandal lynched in Calabar South

A suspected transformer and cable vandal was killed by a mob in Calabar South, Cross River State, early Tuesday morning. Eyewitnesses reported that the incident occurred around 5:00 am on Mayne Avenue. The man, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, was apprehended by a local vigilante group, while other alleged members of his gang escaped.

Residents of Mayne Avenue, Palm Street, and nearby areas have faced repeated power outages due to persistent vandalism of electricity infrastructure. Amos Akpan, an eyewitness, said locals had recently pooled funds to replace stolen transformer components, only for more parts to be removed shortly afterward.

Akpan claimed the deceased was part of a group that specializes in stealing cables and damaging transformers, actions that have caused extended blackouts in the neighbourhood. Police later arrived at the scene and removed the body, assuring residents that investigations are ongoing.

The Cross River State Police confirmed awareness of the incident. Police spokesperson SP Eitiokpa Sunday Akata stated that the command would provide more updates on the situation in due course. Authorities urged residents to remain calm and allow law enforcement to handle matters.
