A chieftain of the Labour Party, Ezeh, has explained why many Nigerians continue to reject electoral laws they describe as unclear and confusing. According to him, vague laws create room for manipulation and weaken public trust in the democratic process.
Ezeh said Nigerians want electoral rules that are straightforward, fair, and easy to understand. He noted that when laws are open to multiple interpretations, it allows powerful interests to twist them to suit their agenda, often at the expense of voters. This, he said, has made many citizens lose confidence in elections and electoral institutions.
The Labour Party leader argued that democracy can only thrive when electoral laws are precise and consistently applied. He stressed that unclear provisions often lead to disputes, court cases, and post-election tensions, which could have been avoided if the laws were clearly written and enforced equally for all political actors.
Ezeh called on lawmakers and electoral authorities to review existing electoral laws and remove grey areas that fuel controversy. He added that Nigerians deserve a transparent system where the rules are known in advance and applied without bias, saying this is key to restoring faith in elections and strengthening democracy.
