Election underway for FC Barcelona’s presidency as Joan Laporta resigns

FC Barcelona has officially begun its presidential election process, set to conclude with the final vote on 15 March. This follows the resignation of Joan Laporta, who stepped down for procedural reasons so he can seek re-election later this year.

Laporta, who first became president in March 2021 after winning 54 percent of the vote, leaves the position after nearly five years in charge, in accordance with the club’s statutes. His temporary departure is standard procedure ahead of the upcoming elections.

In the interim, Vice-President Rafa Yuste will serve as acting president for approximately three and a half months. The temporary leadership ensures continuity in club operations while the electoral process is ongoing.

Other candidates vying for the Barcelona presidency include former club executive Xavier Vilajoana and economist Marc Ciria, who are set to compete against Laporta for the top role. The election is seen as a key moment for the club’s future direction and management.
